Biography

Lois Oster

Cleveland, North Carolina

Lois Oster's bead making journey began over 30 years ago with a bead woven belt made as an attempt to ward off boredom while waiting for a broken leg to heal.  From there, she experimented with various beading and jewelry-making techniques, including off loom bead weaving, bead stringing, and hand engraving.  It was only natural that upon seeing her first artist-made lampwork bead that she would want to give this technique a try, too.  Lois studied various books before taking a beginning bead making class with Gary Newlin, an Asheville glass artist.  From there, she was hooked.  As soon as she got home, she was already planning her lampwork studio.  That was over three and a half years ago.  Since then, she has taken addition courses in lampworking with experts such as Jim Smircich.

In 2002, Lois decided to quit her day job and take up lampworking full time.  She now spends between 6 and 16 hours a day at the torch, creating her beautiful beads.  Her background in beaded jewelry helps her decide not only if a bead will be beautiful, but if it will hang correctly and be easy to work into beaded designs.  Her attention to quality ensures that her beads have smooth, even holes and well-balanced shapes.  Her beads range in style from whimsical, holiday-themed novelty beads, to her Artist Beads line, where she experiments with colors, techniques and styles, creating unique focal beads and sets which are sure to delight jewelry creators.  While her beads are designed with jewelry creations in mind, they can also stand alone on a silver chain or leather cord, for a simple statement.  Lois says her goal as an artist is to not only create beautiful beads that will be pleasing to the owner, but also to create long-lasting beads which can be enjoyed for generations.
